The McCoys

The week leading up to Michael and Jasmine McCoy’s wedding was a heavy one back home. Tornadoes had moved through my hometown and surrounding communities, leaving behind damage, uncertainty, and one of those reminders none of us really ask for: life can change incredibly fast. It made me think a little differently as I packed my cameras and headed north toward the Okoboji area. I found myself thinking about family. About the ordinary moments we sometimes rush past. And about how meaningful it is that, on a wedding day, generations of people gather in one place simply because two people decided to build a life together. That is what I kept coming back to while documenting the McCoys. This is where a new generation begins. And where everything that came before them gets carried forward.

A June Wedding at Swiss Acres

June 13 had originally come with rain in the forecast, so Michael and Jasmine made the safe call to move their ceremony inside the barn at Swiss Acres in Terril, Iowa.

And then Iowa did what Iowa does. Not a drop. Instead, we were given sunshine, blue skies, and a warm 75-degree day that slowly made those barns feel a little warmer as the afternoon went on. But no one seemed too bothered by it. The bridal party had been arriving since that morning, filling the bridal suite with hair appointments, makeup, dresses, conversation, nerves, and all of the little pieces that eventually become a wedding day. Jasmine's look brought together the modern western and boho feeling they envisioned beautifully. Her dress from Grand Bridal paired with florals from Blossoming Creations, while Michael and the guys arrived later that afternoon in their Generation Tux looks. The entire day took place at Swiss Acres, but between its two barns, loft spaces, open property, and little pockets of scenery, there was no shortage of places for the story to unfold.

Before the Ceremony

Michael and Jasmine chose to save their vows for the ceremony, saying those promises surrounded by the people who have helped shape their lives. Their bridal party stood nearby. Parents watched. Friends filled the barn. And somewhere between the vows, reactions, laughter, and their unity shot, two individual stories officially became one. That is the thing about weddings. You can plan the flowers, the dress, the timeline, the music, and every little detail for months. But eventually the decorations fade into the background. What remains is the promise. The people standing beside you. And the family you are beginning to build. The People Make the Story Family was one of the things Michael and Jasmine wanted documented throughout their day, and after the week I had just experienced back home, I don't think I could have appreciated that request more. The kids were a little shy when the cameras first came out. Which, honestly, is usually how it goes. At first there are cautious looks from across the room and the immediate awareness that someone new has arrived with a giant camera. Then slowly the walls disappear. A few laughs happen. Someone gets comfortable. And suddenly their real personalities start showing up. By later in the day, those shy kiddos had warmed right up. Those moments may feel small while they are happening, but someday they won't be. Children grow. Families change. Grandparents get older. Wedding parties scatter across different seasons of life. And photographs and films have this incredible ability to hold onto a version of everyone that existed for only one day. That is why I will always care just as much about what happens around the bride and groom as I do about what happens directly in front of them.

Dinner, Toasts and a Full Barn

By evening, everyone made their way into the reception barn. Backalley BBQ handled dinner while Biggie G Entertainment took over the music and celebration. Michael and Jasmine made their entrance as husband and wife, cut their cake, shared their first dance, and listened as their maid of honor, best man, and Jasmine's dad gave their speeches. Jasmine and Michael also took a moment to thank everyone themselves. And I love when couples do that. Because a wedding might celebrate two people, but it rarely happens because of only two people. There are parents helping.Friends showing up early. Family members traveling. People fixing last-minute details no one else even notices. A wedding day becomes this temporary little village built around two people saying, We're choosing each other.

Then, once dinner plates disappear and the formalities are finished, that village heads straight for the dance floor. Exactly as it should. Where the Generation Begins and the Legacy Lives On

Driving home from this wedding, I kept thinking about the contrast between the week that had just happened and the day I had just documented. One reminded me how quickly life can change. The other reminded me why we celebrate it while it is here. Weddings are not only about beautiful dresses, perfect light, or carefully chosen details. They are about generations. The parents who raised you. The grandparents who started traditions before you were born. The siblings and friends growing alongside you. The children watching from the edges of the dance floor. And two people standing together at the center of it all, choosing what comes next. Michael and Jasmine's wedding was another reminder of why I believe these stories deserve to be documented beyond what something looked like. I want you to remember how it felt. The warmth of the June afternoon. The nerves before the ceremony. The people packed inside the barn. The kids slowly warming up to the camera. The reactions during the vows. The speeches. The dancing. The hugs you probably didn't think twice about giving. Because someday, those might be the photographs and pieces of film that matter most. Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. McCoy.

Here's to the beginning of your generation, the continuation of everything that came before you, and the legacy you'll build from here.
